On Friday February 1st the Manteo Swim Team competed in the NCHSAA East Regional swim meet. The NCHSAA changed the regional format from just East and West divisions to now 3 divisions: East, Central, and West divisions. Only only the top 8 from each region get to advance to the State Championship meet.
Coach Schuler said: “All of the swimmers dropped time in the meet. At the end of the day that is what you want to see. Unfortunately with the change in regional format some of our times that would have made it to the state tournament did not. We look forward to next season!”

Five MHS Wrestlers competed in the Carolina Conference Individual Tournament on January 26th in Tarboro. William Pendleton and Ryan McOwen win first and Trent Jones finished second.
The Manteo Wrestling Team went to Tarboro High School on Saturday to compete in the Tarboro Invitational Tournament where they finished tied for 6th place out of the 11 schools competing.
Coach Metzinger’s comments:
“I though we had a good day of wrestling. All of the guys that went are showing progress on the mat and they are improving each day on things that we are working on. Caleb showed a lot of heart in his match vs GCHS. He was at a physical disadvantage, but he kept fighting and late in the third period he was able to pin the guy. Emmanuel got his first pin, William won first in his division and continued to show neutral dominance and showed his ability to score by Tech Falling all of his opponents. Ryan also had a good day, he had a tough match in the finals and got in a 50-50 position and the other guy beat him to the punch and ended up losing. I am happy with the progress. Our goal is to be wrestling our best going into February, and I feel most of us are doings that.”

On Saturday January 20th the annual AAC Swim Championships took place at the Nags Head YMCA where Camden, Edenton, and Mateo teams faced off for the right to be called conference champions.

Coach Schuler reported that the conference recognized two seniors Caroline and Melissa. Melissa placed first in conference for the 200 IM. Caroline placed first in the 100 butterfly and the 400 freestyle, she also got women’s swimmer of the year award. Also Max placed first in the men’s 200 IM. Both Caroline and Max have qualified for the 1A East Regionals in the 400 freestyle. Caroline has also qualified for the 200 freestyle.
The MHS Wrestling team faced off against Edenton in their only home match of the season on Wednesday. The final score was Edenton 47 Manteo 18.
Coach Metzinger’s comments:
“If one were to only look at the score it would appear to be a blow out. As a group I feel that we had one of our best days in the dual meet. The only matches won were by the two seniors: Ryan McOwen and William Pendleton but there were some very close matches by the other guys. We were in 4 matches we lost and they were fun to watch. I’m proud of how hard they fought, and the young guys took a step in the right direction yesterday. Thats all I ask of the first year guys.
I really hope next year the ADs in our area will do what is in the best interest of the kids involved in wrestling. For 4 years I have been fighting to get us combined with the 2A league to help solidify our schedule, allow us to have home meets, and reduce our travel. We start every year with zero meets on our schedule and all schools within a 2 hour drive already have their midweek matches set in conference. In my 5 years of coaching the wrestling team has traveled over 10,282 miles due to us not being combined with the 2A schedule.”
